How to get into photography?

Its just basily a hobbie i would like to take up but it would be great if I could go like pro.Is there anything I need to know and what key skills will help me? Also any photography programs that are 'must haves' like photoshop or wateva? I know i shouldn't go buying the whole works but just something to start me off. Thanks
